Hooves in the Kitchen: The Night Everything Shattered

I woke to a strange sound a dragging, scraping noise. I figured it was just the trash cans, until I stepped into the kitchen and saw the bottom half of our back door shattered… and Oscar, our horse, standing calmly on the patio with the broken door hanging around his neck. Somehow, he’d broken through even though the latch on his paddock was still locked.

He wasn’t hurt, but he looked shaken. Then I noticed movement by the tree line. I grabbed a flashlight and stepped outside. Oscar didn’t budge, like he had done his part. That’s when I saw her a girl, maybe nine or ten, crouched beside a backpack.

Her name was Kendra. She’d run away after a fight at home and had wandered through the woods. Oscar must’ve sensed her and come to get help. I gave her some food and called the sheriff. She clung to me, not wanting to go.

Eventually, she did but I made sure to get the social worker’s number. That day, something shifted. We’d been so focused on money problems, house repairs, and long workdays. But Oscar reminded me that maybe we’re doing more good than we realize. Sometimes, life doesn’t knock it breaks down your door to show you why you’re really here.
