Two People Dead After Firefighters Responding to Brush Fire in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Are Attacked

On June 29, 2025, two firefighters were killed and several others injured in a deadly ambush while responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Shortly after fire crews arrived, unknown attackers opened fire from the woods, striking firefighters and law enforcement officers. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders to the scene. The FBI has joined the investigation, which officials describe as a sniper ambush targeting firefighters. A shelter-in-place order was issued, and civilians nearby were evacuated amid the chaos. Idaho’s governor and national fire officials expressed heartbreak and urged prayers for the victims and responders.

Earlier that week, on June 23, LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng was fatally struck by a vehicle while assisting a crash victim on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. Deng, a respected 26-year veteran, was helping a stranded driver when both were hit by an oncoming car. He was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries. City officials and police leaders honored Deng as a hero whose last act was one of selfless service. A police procession and widespread tributes paid respect to his dedication and sacrifice.
