My parents died when we were kids, and my grandfather raised my sister and me. At 18, she left and never looked back, while I stayed and cared for our grandpa through seven years of illness. He passed away a few days ago, and she suddenly reappeared demanding half of the inheritance. What she didn’t know was that Grandpa had left everything to me — his final wish. I didn’t tell anyone; I just took the money and quietly left town after the funeral, just as she had done years ago.
She eventually tracked me down and called, furious when I told her she wasn’t getting a cent. She accused me of manipulation and claimed the money was her right too. I hung up and haven’t spoken to her since, but I’ve been thinking: even if she doesn’t deserve it, should I give her something? Or is honoring Grandpa’s wish — and my own hurt — enough reason to keep it all?
