Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

A classic and delightful dish, Scalloped Potatoes are perfect for special occasions like Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or just a Sunday dinner. This version, akin to potatoes au gratin, has been tried and tested by many and stands out as a favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1⁄2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • A dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1⁄2 cup grated cheese (for topping)
  • Paprika (for color)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
    • In a saucepan, melt the butter and blend in the flour. Let it sit for a minute.
    • Gradually add cold milk, whisking continuously.
    • Season with salt and cayenne pepper.
    • On low heat, cook the sauce until it’s smooth and boiling. Occasionally whisk.
    • Reduce the heat and mix in the cheddar cheese until melted.
  2. Layer the Potatoes:
    • In a greased one-quart casserole dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  3. Final Touches:
    • Sprinkle the additional 1⁄2 cup of cheese on top.
    • Add a dash of paprika for a pop of color.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake the dish uncovered in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 1 hour or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Serve hot and enjoy this creamy, cheesy delight!
