Last night we had dinner with my family and things went sideways. We\u2019re eating, everything\u2019s normal, and then my dad decides to take a jab at Leo. He goes, \u201cArt teachers are failed artists.\u201d Everyone at the table laughs, except me and Leo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I waited for him to stop, but he just kept going with the same \u201cjokes.\u201d Finally, to everyone\u2019s shock, I told my dad he was being cruel to the person I love, and that if he couldn\u2019t show respect, then maybe we didn\u2019t need disrespectful people at our wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My mom gasped, my sister gave me a \u201cseriously?\u201d look, and Leo just squeezed my hand and stayed quiet. Then out of nowhere, my dad explained that he was an art teacher for years, until he left for a better-paying job to support the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one had ever told me this. My mom jumped in, all soft-voiced, and said that I was too little to remember, and my father doesn\u2019t talk about it. It\u2019s complicated, somehow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And now suddenly everyone\u2019s looking at me like I\u2019m the bad guy. Like I kicked open some deep, dark wound on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, my family\u2019s been acting like I overreacted and humiliated my dad. But honestly? He was mocking my fianc\u00e9 to his face. I don\u2019t care about the \u201ctragic backstory\u201d if he\u2019s using it as an excuse to belittle someone I love. And I still don\u2019t know why his jokes were so harsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I get that it must sting for him, but how is that my fault when I literally didn\u2019t know? Now I feel stuck, like I either have to apologize for defending my fianc\u00e9, or double down and risk making this rift even worse.
