At first, I brushed it off. But it wasn\u2019t a one-time accident\u2014it became <em>every<\/em> week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Last week, right after I got my paycheck, he encouraged the kids to \u201corder whatever they want\u2014Mommy\u2019s got you.\u201d<\/strong> (FYI, I am <em>not<\/em> their mom.) But this time, instead of reaching for my wallet, I calmly said, <em>\u201cOh, that\u2019s fine\u2014I\u2019ll just split it. Can you hand me your card?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>His face froze.<\/strong> He tried to laugh it off and said he\u2019d \u201cforgotten it again,\u201d but I shrugged and said, <em>\u201cNo worries, I already paid my part. The rest is yours. I\u2019ll take the kids outside while you sort it out.\u201d<\/em> Then I stood up, told the kids to wait in the car with me, and left him there staring at the bill like it was a bomb. He ended up having to call his brother to come pay because the restaurant wouldn\u2019t let him leave without settling it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The car ride home was silent.<\/strong> Later that night, he texted me saying I \u201cembarrassed him\u201d and should\u2019ve covered like I always do. I simply replied, <em>\u201cI\u2019m dating a partner, not sponsoring a family of three.\u201d<\/em> Now he suddenly remembers his card every time\u2014and dinner magically became less frequent.
