But when doctors examined her, they were stunned to find something no one imagined \u2014 she had been carrying a baby inside her for <strong>40 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further scans revealed a rare condition known as <strong>lithopedion<\/strong>, or <em>\u201cstone baby.\u201d<\/em> Decades earlier, the woman had experienced a pregnancy that developed outside her uterus. The fetus could not survive, and her body was unable to expel it. Instead of allowing infection to spread, her body did something extraordinary \u2014 it slowly <strong>turned the fetus to stone<\/strong>, calcifying it for protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors explained that the human body sometimes uses the same process seen in aging joints \u2014 like calcifying cartilage \u2014 to shield itself from danger. \u201cThe body uses the same process to stay healthy,\u201d said Dr. Kim Garcsi. In this case, the body created a protective shell around the fetus, preserving it silently for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The baby-sized mass, weighing nearly four pounds, was finally discovered on an X-ray. Though heartbreaking, doctors considered it a medical miracle.
