Recently, the company decided to expand the team with some \u201cyouthful perspective.\u201d They hired a 23-year-old recent graduate named Lana, who has zero experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My boss told me to work an extra hour every day \u2014 unpaid \u2014 to train her. When I asked for how long, he said, \u201cAs long as it takes for her to learn our process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I refused, explaining that I\u2019m already overloaded and can\u2019t stay late teaching a new hire without compensation. He replied, \u201cWhere\u2019s your team spirit? Once she\u2019s ready, she\u2019ll help you with the workload. This is for you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I just smiled and said, \u201cThank you.\u201d What no one knew was that I had already been secretly applying for other jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next day, they all froze when they arrived to the office in the morning and found out that I had moved my belongings to another desk \u2014 and placed Lana\u2019s things on mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My boss asked what was going on, and I said, \u201cSince you hired Lana to take some of my workload, I\u2019m happy to give her all of it. I\u2019m leaving.\u201d Then I handed in my two weeks\u2019 notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019ve found a new job that respects my time, and I refuse to stay somewhere that expects me to give my time and effort for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
HR called me in, trying to convince me to stay. They said they value their senior employees and that I\u2019m one of their most precious assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
