Job interviews are stressful enough, but sometimes it\u2019s not the candidate who makes things weird \u2014 it\u2019s the interviewer or the whole setup. One person walked into an interview only to find their ex as the hiring manager, smirking and making personal comments before \u201capproving\u201d them for a trial. Others were hit with bizarre questions like \u201cWhat fruit would you be?\u201d or deeply invasive ones like \u201cHow are you really doing?\u201d or demands to explain traumatic events in their past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many stories showed straight-up unprofessionalism and manipulation. Some candidates were kept waiting for over an hour, scolded for being late because of a car wreck, or told things like, \u201cWe\u2019re not hiring, this is just a courtesy,\u201d after they\u2019d flown in on their own dime. One school even seemed to set a teacher up to fail a demo lesson just so they could swoop in and act like saviors afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others realized mid-interview that the company only wanted free labor or money from them. One software engineer was clearly brought in just to solve a problem the team couldn\u2019t fix, even though the role had already been filled. Another candidate was told they\u2019d have to start by paying for an expensive exam themselves. Some experienced discrimination outright \u2014 being told they \u201clooked too old,\u201d \u201ctoo attractive,\u201d or feeling reduced to a \u201cman child\u201d stereotype because they worked in video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the end, many of these people walked away, even when they were later offered the job. Their stories are a good reminder that interviews go both ways: you\u2019re not just proving you\u2019re a good fit for them \u2014 they\u2019re proving they\u2019re a place you\u2019d actually want to work.
