He had a twin sister named Dorothy and earned the nickname \u201cDash\u201d as a baby when his mother entered them in a \u201cbeautiful baby\u201d contest, playfully suggesting they\u2019d be even cuter as \u201cDot\u201d and \u201cDash.\u201dCrofts began his musical journey as a drummer before meeting saxophonist Jim Seals.
