A stranger arrived in a red van, knocked on his door, and threw a pint of sulphuric acid directly into his face before fleeing the scene. The attacker had mistaken Andreas for someone else, making the brutal assault a tragic case of mistaken identity. The attack left Andreas blind in one eye and caused severe burns to his face, arms, and body. In the immediate aftermath, Andreas rushed to the kitchen, tore off his clothes, and poured water over himself while his wife called emergency services. He later collapsed in the driveway and remained unconscious for six days in intensive care. During the long months of surgeries and rehabilitation that followed, one fear overwhelmed him more than anything else \u2014 whether his 18-month-old son, Theo, would still recognize him after the attack had so drastically changed his appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because of the severity of his injuries, Andreas and his family decided Theo should not visit him in hospital, meaning father and son were separated for nearly four months. Andreas later described the emotional pain of missing his child and worrying constantly about how Theo would react when they reunited. When the day finally came, Theo initially clung to his mother and refused to approach his father. But everything changed the moment he heard Andreas speak. Recognizing his father\u2019s voice instantly, the little boy reached out for a hug and refused to let go for a long time.
