Messages appeared late at night and again before sunrise, adding to questions about when the president found time to rest. Those questions grew after cameras captured him closing his eyes during several lengthy public events. Critics interpreted the moments as signs that he had fallen asleep, while White House allies strongly rejected that characterization. Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law and a Fox News host, has now offered a glimpse into the family’s understanding of his demanding schedule. Her account suggests his nights may be considerably shorter than those of most Americans.

Lara discussed the subject during an appearance on former professional wrestler Tyrus’ podcast. She acknowledged that she does not always get enough rest herself and said she shares some of Trump’s ability to function on limited sleep. Meanwhile, an analysis of his Truth Social activity found only five days in April when the timing of his posts appeared to leave room for eight uninterrupted hours. That online activity alone cannot prove how long someone slept, but it added another layer to the public debate. Then Lara revealed the number of hours she believes Trump typically gets—and it was far below the usual recommendation for adults.

“He sleeps maybe three or four hours a night,” Lara said, adding that she personally needs slightly more. Trump made a similar claim in 2017, when he said he generally slept four to five hours while working until midnight or 1 a.m. and rising around 5 a.m. The Associated Press reported those comments during his first administration. The presidency has no dependable closing hour: unlike an attorney preparing for court or a household organizing insurance, mortgage, investment, and estate decisions, urgent calls may arrive at any moment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced that picture during a congressional exchange with Rep. Ted Lieu, saying he had never seen Trump fall asleep and that the president sometimes called him at 2 a.m. or 5 a.m. The White House has also described Trump’s closed eyes during meetings as a way of listening attentively, while Trump separately said boredom—not sleep—explained one highly discussed episode. Reuters reported that explanation in January 2026.

The competing accounts leave room for disagreement about individual videos, but Lara’s statement offers the clearest recent estimate from a member of Trump’s family. Three or four hours would be substantially below the seven to nine hours generally recommended for most adults, although sleep requirements and routines differ from person to person. Frequent overnight posts and Rubio’s description of early-morning calls support the idea that Trump remains active during hours when many colleagues are resting, but they do not establish a complete medical picture. Nor does briefly closing one’s eyes prove that someone is asleep. What Lara ultimately disclosed was narrower but still striking: according to her, the president’s much-discussed late-night presence is supported by a routine that may leave him sleeping only three or four hours before another workday begins.

Long after most of Washington had gone quiet, Donald Trump’s social-media account was still active.
