Junker had been traveling on the Sun Princess when he fell into a swimming pool on August 16 during the voyage near Italy. His family said he was found unresponsive and was quickly taken ashore by the Italian Coast Guard before being admitted to a hospital in Naples. Doctors discovered a severe cervical spinal cord injury and performed emergency surgery the following day. Despite the efforts of medical teams, the extent of his injuries left him with significant physical challenges and dependent on a ventilator for breathing. His loved ones then worked to bring him back to Minnesota so he could continue receiving specialized care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sadly, further testing revealed that his injuries could not be treated. On September 4 at 6:33 p.m., Junker passed away surrounded by his wife Jeanine, his children, parents, and close friends.
