Douglas, now 82, disclosed the long-kept secret in his upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, explaining that he and Turner had “fallen hard” for each other while filming in Mexico. Their undeniable chemistry as Jack and Joan had fueled speculation for decades, but both actors had repeatedly denied that their relationship had gone beyond the screen. According to Douglas, he was separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas, when the romance developed, but things changed after Diandra and their son, Cameron, visited him in Mexico. Turner ultimately decided she did not want to interfere, and Douglas and Diandra later reunited before eventually separating again. The revelation quickly became a major entertainment story, although many fans joked that the supposed secret had been one of Hollywood’s worst-kept secrets.

Turner, however, appeared far less interested in the renewed attention surrounding something that happened four decades ago. Speaking to PEOPLE after Douglas’ confession became public, the actress responded with a lighthearted comment: “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago!” She added that she loves Douglas and looks forward to reading his memoir. Despite their romantic history, the two remained friends and continued working together over the years, appearing in The Jewel of the Nile, The War of the Roses and, much later, The Kominsky Method in 2021. Turner eventually married entrepreneur Jay Weiss in 1984, and they welcomed daughter Rachel before divorcing in 2007. Douglas later married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and the couple remain together. Fans meanwhile took to social media with surprise that the romance was finally being acknowledged, with many insisting they had suspected the truth all along.

Kathleen Turner has finally reacted after Michael Douglas revealed that the two Hollywood stars secretly had a romantic relationship while filming Romancing the Stone in 1984.
