On October 10, 2026, the singer visited Art of Play, hoping to purchase several interesting items. However, she later took to X to complain that she felt judged by an employee who allegedly questioned whether she could afford an item. Comparing the experience to Julia Roberts’s famous shopping scene in Pretty Woman, Kelly said the encounter left her insulted and accused the store of losing a significant sale. The business responded the following day, explaining that the mechanical singing bird Kelly had asked about was a special display piece that was not available for purchase. But Kelly wasn’t satisfied with that explanation, and the disagreement quickly spread across social media, dividing fans between those supporting the singer and those defending the small business.

The dispute intensified when Kelly returned to X with a more detailed account of the conversation. She claimed an employee had pointed to a price tag and told her the bird cost $15,000, offering to find something comparable. Kelly accused the store of changing its story and insisted that supporting small businesses did not excuse rude treatment. Art of Play later clarified that its display bird, Molly, was permanently attached to the wall, while a nearly identical automaton owned by its creator, artist Bliss Kolb, was potentially available for $15,000. The store said it had explained the distinction during Kelly’s visit and described the online backlash as overwhelming for a small local business. Some commenters criticized Kelly for publicly confronting the shop, while others questioned the store’s changing explanations. The business ended its response with a playful reference to Kelly’s hit song “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” adding another twist to the exchange. With both sides standing by their accounts, the disagreement left one question lingering: could the singer and the Brooklyn shop eventually clear the air?

Kelly Clarkson expected an enjoyable shopping trip in Brooklyn, New York, but instead found herself at the center of a heated dispute with a local store.
