Donald Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, experienced an awkward moment during her first White House briefing when she accidentally referred to her husband as “my president.” The briefing lasted approximately 15 minutes, during which she answered just three questions, but one exchange quickly became the moment everyone was talking about. A reporter asked how Zacharia planned to balance her demanding new role in Washington, D.C., with family life while her husband and children remained in California. Explaining that her family would be moving with her, Zacharia emphasized that spending evenings away from her children was unacceptable. However, she stumbled over her words, saying, “This idea of not spending evenings with my kids is completely unacceptable, so my president… uh, excuse me, my husband is out here.” Realizing her mistake almost immediately, she recovered with a lighthearted response, joking, “That’s a good one.” Although the slip appeared brief, it provided an unexpected moment during a high-profile first appearance in front of the press.

Zacharia, 46, is a political commentator who previously worked as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group’s Truth Social platform. Trump praised her appointment, describing her as a loyal supporter and highlighting her involvement with the MAGA movement. She took over the position after Karoline Leavitt departed in August 2026 to spend more time with her family. Leavitt’s tenure had attracted considerable attention because of her combative exchanges with mainstream journalists and her support for conservative media outlets. Zacharia now faces the challenge of managing daily press briefings while communicating the administration’s positions during a politically sensitive period ahead of the November midterm elections. Her first appearance offered a glimpse of the pressure that comes with the job, even as she demonstrated an ability to laugh at herself. While the verbal mix-up was quickly corrected, it gave reporters and viewers an unexpected talking point as Trump’s newest press secretary begins her tenure in the White House.
