According to police, the pilot reported a fire started inside the basket, prompting an emergency descent. As the balloon neared the ground he told people to jump; some managed to, but others could not. The flames intensified, the added weight caused the balloon to rise again, and it later fell due to loss of lift. Officials said three of the victims were found holding each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gov. Jorginho Mello declared mourning and urged a full inquiry, while President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva offered condolences and federal support for survivors and local authorities.
