Middle school teacher in jail for heinous sexual offenses allegedly killed by convicted murderer

Former Charlotte Teacher Found Dead in North Carolina Prison; Inmate Charged with Murder

Ernest Nichols, a former Charlotte school teacher, was found dead in his cell at Greene Correctional Institution in Maury, North Carolina, on October 5, according to state officials. Nichols, 60, had been serving a 15-year sentence for crimes involving a minor and was set for release in 2027.

Prison staff discovered him unresponsive around 6:50 a.m. and immediately began life-saving measures. Paramedics arrived shortly after, but Nichols was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m. The facility was placed on temporary lockdown as investigators began examining the scene.

Two days later, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that inmate Wilbert Baldwin, 41, had been charged with Nichols’ murder. Baldwin, already serving a sentence for a 2010 second-degree murder conviction, is now being held without bond while the investigation continues.

Nichols had once worked as a physical education teacher at Ranson Middle School in Charlotte. He was suspended without pay in 2009 following allegations of misconduct and later convicted of statutory rape in 2011.

Before his arrest, Nichols had been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district for 14 years. His case drew public attention at the time due to his long tenure and the severity of the charges against him.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing, but they have confirmed that both inmates were housed in the same section of the facility. The State Bureau of Investigation and Greene County Sheriff’s Office continue to work jointly on the case.

Officials reminded the public that resources remain available for survivors of sexual abuse and trauma. The National Sexual Assault Hotline provides free, confidential help 24/7 at 800-656-HOPE (4673) or online at online.rainn.org.

Nichols’ death marks the latest in a string of violent incidents within North Carolina’s prison system, prompting renewed concerns over inmate safety.
