Cleaning a dirty fan doesn’t have to leave dust flying all over your room. One of the easiest ways to do it is by using a simple garbage bag. Start by turning off and unplugging the fan completely to make sure it’s safe to clean. Then, take a large garbage bag and gently slip it around one fan blade at a time, or around the fan head if it’s small enough. Hold the opening of the bag tightly at the base to keep any dust from escaping. While the blade is inside the bag, use a damp cloth or a mix of water and vinegar to wipe it clean — all the dust will fall straight into the bag instead of on your floor.
Repeat this for each blade. If your fan is very dirty, you can remove the front cover and wipe the blades and grill more thoroughly using a soft cloth or brush. Once everything is clean, dry the parts completely before putting them back together. When you’re done, throw the garbage bag away, plug the fan back in, and enjoy the fresh air. This quick trick keeps your fan spotless and your home free of dust — all without creating a mess.
