Showering Tips for Over 65: How Often Is Healthy?

As we age, skin changes naturally. For adults over 65, it becomes thinner, less elastic, and produces fewer natural oils. These changes make daily bathing less ideal, as it can strip the skin of essential moisture, while waiting too long between showers can lead to hygiene issues. Experts recommend showering every two to three days for older adults.

This routine maintains cleanliness, controls odors, and avoids excessive dryness. On days without a full shower, simple washing of the armpits, feet, and intimate areas can help maintain freshness and prevent infections without damaging sensitive skin. Showering too often, especially with hot water and harsh soaps, can cause itching, irritation, and dry patches.

Conversely, skipping showers for more than a week may encourage fungal growth, bacterial infections, and unpleasant odors, while also affecting confidence and self-esteem. Beyond physical health, hygiene routines contribute to emotional well-being. Feeling clean supports independence, dignity, and a sense of control over daily life, which is particularly important in older age.

To make bathing safe and effective, use lukewarm water and limit showers to around ten minutes. Apply a gentle moisturizer afterward to maintain skin hydration. For those with limited mobility, non-slip mats and grab bars reduce the risk of falls, making daily care both safe and manageable. Finding this balance ensures that older adults remain clean, comfortable, and confident without compromising skin health or safety.
