I’m Selling My House to Get Rid of My Stepchildren

After his wife passed away in November 2022, a man was left living with her three adult children—aged 21, 22, and 25—who had always made it clear he wasn’t their father. Despite that, he and their mother had allowed them to live rent-free due to the high cost of living in their city. He continued to cover all utilities and even provided food for the youngest, who was still in school.

Once their mother died, the stepchildren stopped helping around the house entirely. They treated the home like a free place to sleep while contributing nothing. The man eventually had to hire a cleaner because they refused to lift a finger. Tired of being disrespected and taken for granted, he made a major decision: he put the house up for sale without discussing it with them.

The house sold quickly, and he announced he was moving to his cabin. He even gave each stepchild $10,000 to start their own lives. Although they had seen the “For Sale” sign and open houses, they were still angry, accusing him of kicking them out of “their home,” despite never treating it like one.

Many people supported his decision, pointing out that these were adults who had lived rent-free and disrespected both him and their mother’s home. Commenters agreed that he had been more than generous, and that their mother would likely be disappointed in how they behaved. In the end, the stepchildren pooled their money to rent an apartment, facing adulthood without someone to carry them.
