Why the Hotel Receptionist Told Me to Keep the Bathroom Light On

After a long day of travel, I finally checked into a quiet hotel tucked away on a peaceful roadside. I was tired, craving nothing more than a warm shower and a good night’s sleep. As I picked up my room key, the receptionist gave me a strange instruction: “Keep the bathroom light on overnight.” I blinked, confused, but nodded and headed upstairs. Exhaustion won, and I didn’t think much of it—until later.

In my room, everything seemed normal. Soft bed, clean towels, cozy lighting. But that one request looped in my mind like a quiet whisper. Still, I shrugged it off and left the bathroom light glowing. Hours later, as I drifted to sleep, a soft rustling sound woke me. My heart thumped—until I realized the noise wasn’t threatening. It was soft… rapid… skittering.

Turning on the room lights, I noticed something odd near the edge of the bathroom door. A tiny shadow moved—then darted away. A moment later, another followed. My breath caught as I realized what was happening: tiny insects were drawn to the bathroom light instead of venturing into the bedroom. The receptionist hadn’t been mysterious after all—just trying to keep guests comfortable in a region known for nighttime critters.

By morning, the mystery was solved. No ghosts, no horror story—just simple hospitality and a clever trick. As I checked out, I thanked the receptionist. He smiled knowingly and replied, “A peaceful night’s sleep sometimes comes from the smallest details.” I left with a laugh, grateful for a quirky tip that turned into an unforgettable travel tale.
