I Never Planned to Be a Dad—Until She Chose Me

During a routine morning patrol in a Modesto park, Officer Duvall came across a young woman named Kiara curled up on a bench, holding her newborn daughter, Nia. Just 19 years old, Kiara had recently aged out of foster care, delivered her baby in a motel, and was now living on the streets. Touched by her situation, Duvall helped them get to a shelter, assuming his involvement would end there.

But something kept pulling him back. He began visiting regularly, offering encouragement and practical help. Over time, Kiara began to trust him, often turning to him for advice and support with her baby. Then, one day, she made a deeply emotional request she asked Duvall if he would consider adopting Nia, believing he could offer the life she couldn’t provide.

Though unsure at first, Duvall couldn’t deny the connection he felt. The adoption journey was anything but easy filled with legal complications, background checks, and a difficult two-month period without any contact. During that time, Kiara worked hard to stabilize her own life but ultimately decided that giving Nia a better future meant letting her go.

Once the adoption was finalized, Duvall gave her the name Nia Grace, honoring the name Kiara had chosen. Today, Nia is a happy, thriving four-year-old, and Kiara still visits for birthdays. What started as a small act of kindness in a park became the beginning of a life neither of them could have imagined a powerful reminder that love often finds us when we least expect it.
