Chilling Final Moments of Pilot’s Communication with Air Traffic Control Before California Plane Crash Revealed

A routine flight from San Diego to Phoenix ended in tragedy when a Cessna 414 crashed into the ocean off Sunset Cliffs, California. The twin-engine plane, carrying six people, disappeared from radar minutes after takeoff. Radio transmissions revealed the pilot was struggling to maintain altitude and made a final “Mayday” call before the aircraft vanished. All six on board are presumed dead.

Despite urgent instructions from air traffic control to divert and climb, the pilot couldn’t regain control. The plane went down about five miles offshore. Search efforts soon uncovered debris and an oil sheen, but no survivors. Officials believe the aircraft sank in waters over 200 feet deep, forcing lifeguards to suspend their dive operations.

Among the victims were Jeremy Bingham and his three sons — Bailey, Gavin, and Ayden — along with pilot Landon Baldwin and his pregnant wife, Torrie. Landon was described as a devoted father and experienced pilot. The accident devastated both families and left their communities in mourning.

Obituaries paid tribute to the Bingham men’s lives and accomplishments, celebrating their work ethic, kindness, and tight family bond. A memorial service for the Bingham family will be held June 14 at Eastern Arizona College’s football field. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as loved ones try to cope with the unimaginable loss.
