My husband and I booked an Airbnb for a quiet weekend. We arrived late and went straight to the bedroom to sleep. While getting ready for bed, I noticed a small blinking light on a shelf across from the bed. When I looked closer, I realized it was a small camera hidden inside the wood. It was pointed directly at the bed.
I quietly told my husband. He checked it and then placed a towel over it. We felt uncomfortable, but it was late at night, and the cabin was in a remote area. We decided to go to sleep and handle it in the morning.
At around 2 a.m., the bedroom door suddenly burst open. The Airbnb owner came in, yelling angrily. He shouted, “You idiots, this is a—” and then stopped mid-sentence when he saw the towel over the camera. His expression changed, and he looked nervous, like he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t.
My husband stood up and told him to get out. The owner backed out without saying anything else and closed the door. We immediately got up, packed our things, and left. We drove to a nearby gas station and called the police and Airbnb support.
Later, we found out the camera was not legal, and the owner got into serious trouble. We did not get the peaceful weekend we wanted, but we learned to always check a room and trust our instincts.
