Before we married, my husband made a promise that meant everything to me — he swore that once we had children, we would return to my home country so I could have my family’s support. I believed him. His mother, who lived under our roof and enjoyed every comfort, even had the audacity to say he shouldn’t “waste money on a damn trip,” as if my mother’s life meant nothing. Hearing her say, “People die. That’s life,” shattered something inside me.

That moment became the last straw. The years of broken promises, emotional abandonment, and disrespect reached a tipping point. I realized that staying meant sacrificing not just my happiness, but my identity, my family, and my dignity. So I chose myself. I chose my parents, my roots, my peace. Leaving wasn’t easy, but it was necessary — because sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is walk away from a life that slowly silences their soul.
