I Started Hearing Strange Noises from the Attic, So I Installed Hidden Cameras to Find Out What Was Going on — Story of the Day

When Emma moved into her estranged father’s old house, she expected the usual signs of age — creaks, drafts, and dim hallways. But soon, strange noises began coming from the attic each night, unsettling her. While sorting through her father’s belongings, she found hints of a man she barely knew: a neighbor who claimed he was kind, a photo album full of pictures of her childhood, and an unfinished letter that ended with, “And the most important thing you need to know is…” Her father had taken secrets to the grave.

As the attic noises continued, Emma noticed things that didn’t add up — crumbs appearing overnight, thuds, and even a cereal box labeled “For Tommy,” though she didn’t know anyone by that name. After a neighbor mentioned seeing a strange light in the attic on her security footage, Emma installed cameras of her own. One night, a loud crash woke her, and when she checked the footage, she saw a young woman moving across the attic floor — and a hidden door standing open behind her.

Terrified but determined, Emma rushed to the attic, where the hidden door eventually opened to reveal a young woman holding a small boy. The woman explained that Emma’s father had secretly let them stay there when they had nowhere else to go. He had told them to remain hidden until Emma arrived and promised to tell her everything in a letter he never finished. The boy’s name was Tommy — the name on the cereal box.

Shaken, Emma listened as the woman tearfully described how her father had helped them and spoken often of Emma, regretting the distance between them. Realizing how little she truly knew about him — and how much he had tried to make amends — Emma invited the woman and the child to stay in the house, at least temporarily. Though the house had been filled with mysteries, she finally understood the one truth her father hadn’t managed to write: he wanted her to continue his act of kindness.
