Tragic End to Spring Break: 20-Year-Old College Student Found Dead After Wisconsin River Boat Accident

Twenty-year-old Francesco Di Filippo, a college student from Chicago, was found dead on June 30, 2025, nearly three months after he went missing during a boating accident on the Wisconsin River. The search for Francesco began in early April when the boat he was on capsized near Kilbourn Dam during spring break with his grandfather, Luis Di Filippo. While another passenger survived and his grandfather’s body was recovered soon after, Francesco’s whereabouts remained unknown until recently.

The incident shook the Di Filippo family and the local community, who had held onto hope throughout the long and difficult search. Francesco’s mother, Lina Di Filippo-Schultz, expressed the deep pain of losing her son and her father, saying family was always the most important to him. His father and girlfriend also shared their grief and the emotional toll the uncertainty had taken on their lives.

Authorities explained that dangerous river conditions, including strong currents and high water levels, had complicated rescue efforts from the start. Despite these challenges, volunteers and search teams worked tirelessly for weeks to locate Francesco. Public warnings were issued to other boaters about the risky conditions, emphasizing the importance of safety precautions.

Now, with Francesco finally brought home, the family is left to mourn and remember a young man who was beloved by all who knew him. Known for his kindness and dedication, Francesco’s tragic passing is a reminder of the unpredictable dangers of nature and the importance of treasuring every moment with loved ones.
