At Least 36 Reported Dead After Pharmaceutical Factory Explodes in Southern India – Here’s What We Know

Indian officials have raised the death toll to at least 36 following a deadly explosion at a pharmaceutical factory in Telangana. Dozens more were injured, and DNA tests have been ordered to identify victims who were badly burned. The blast occurred on June 30 in the spray dryer unit of Sigachi Industries, which had 108 workers on site.

Rescue teams continue clearing debris from the collapsed factory, about 50 kilometers from Hyderabad. Two injured workers later died in the hospital, while emergency crews search for any others trapped. The state government has formed a panel to investigate the cause of the explosion, which caused significant structural damage and suspended factory operations for 90 days.

In a separate tragedy, an Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing at least 290 people. The Boeing 787-8 crashed into a medical college hostel in a densely populated area, with only one survivor reported. Rescue efforts and investigations are ongoing amid deep grief across India.

The plane crash dealt a major blow to Boeing’s safety record and added pressure on the Indian aviation sector. Authorities have suspended operations at Ahmedabad’s airport and appealed for blood donations as families of the victims await news. Both incidents are under active investigation to determine causes and prevent future disasters.
