4 groups of people should avoid eating chayote

Chayote is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making it a healthy addition to many diets. However, it isn’t suitable for everyone. Some people may experience unwanted effects or complications, especially if they have certain medical conditions.

Individuals with kidney problems should be cautious because chayote contains oxalates, which may increase the risk of kidney stones. People who are allergic to vegetables in the gourd family—such as squash, pumpkin, or cucumbers—may also react to chayote and should avoid it if they experience itching, swelling, or other symptoms.

Those taking blood sugar-lowering medications should monitor their glucose levels closely, as chayote can naturally reduce blood sugar and potentially cause hypoglycemia when combined with diabetes medication. Meanwhile, people with sensitive digestion may experience bloating or discomfort due to its high fiber content.

In general, chayote is safe and healthy for most people, but those with kidney issues, allergies, diabetes, or digestive sensitivities should consult a healthcare professional before adding it regularly to their meals.
