He Mocked Her for Speaking Other Languages — So I Reminded Him What Respect Sounds Like

At Flavors of the World, I’ve seen all kinds of people mispronounce menu items it happens. But Amanda was different. Her pronunciation in various languages was flawless. Every week, she came in with her boyfriend, Andrew, who consistently corrected her with arrogant confidence… and comically wrong versions. The more she spoke with grace and accuracy, the more he cut her down in front of everyone especially when his parents joined them one night.

That evening, Amanda’s usual spark was dimmed, clearly worn down by Andrew’s constant need to belittle her intellect. As he mocked her again, even for ordering pho ga properly, I couldn’t bite my tongue any longer. I spoke to him in Mandarin, asking him not to treat his girlfriend so harshly. Amanda’s face lit up, replying beautifully in return. Andrew was stunned. She finally stood her ground, telling him — and his parents — that knowing other languages wasn’t “showing off,” it was hard-earned knowledge.

The confrontation sparked something in Amanda. The very next week, she came in alone — radiant and unburdened. Over lunch, she told me she’d broken up with Andrew. For the first time in years, she felt free to embrace her love of languages. Inspired by that one moment of support, she decided to apply for a job as a translator at an international nonprofit. Her confidence was back — and with it, a sense of purpose she’d buried under years of someone else’s insecurities.

Sometimes, it takes just one voice to call out cruelty and remind someone of their worth. Amanda didn’t just find her voice — she reclaimed it. And in doing so, she reminded me why even the smallest acts of kindness can change someone’s entire direction.
