The Anniversary Road Trip That Revealed the Past

For our first anniversary, Clay surprised me with breakfast in bed—bacon, cinnamon toast, and a promise of a weekend road trip with no distractions. I hoped this meant he was finally ready to move on from his painful past. As we drove through peaceful cornfields and scenic views, I felt hopeful, believing this trip was a fresh start for us.

But as we journeyed on, I noticed Clay’s mood shift when I mentioned memories that didn’t align with his expectations. His quietness and subtle frustrations unsettled me, hinting that this trip might be more about his past than our future. When we reached a small state park, the tension grew, and I sensed there was something he wasn’t telling me.

The truth came out when I found a heart carved into a tree with his name and another woman’s—Megan. Clay confessed that he had been here before with her, hoping this trip would help him rewrite old memories with me. Instead, it awakened feelings he hadn’t expected, leaving me hurt and unsure where I fit in his story.

In a vulnerable moment, I told Clay I needed him present with me, not stuck in the past. I whispered “I love you” first, and though he hesitated, he finally admitted his feelings too. That night, we realized our relationship wasn’t defined by ghosts but by what we choose to build together — something real and new.
