Holding On to Hope: Texas Couple Survives Four Hours Clinging to a Post During Devastating Flood

As flash floods tore through Ingram, Texas, on the morning of July 4, 2025, Doug and Elizabeth Fuller found themselves fighting for their lives as their home was swallowed by rising waters. What began as a familiar heavy rainstorm turned catastrophic when a wall of water slammed into their home, knocking down doors and causing furniture to float. Doug tried to protect his musical instruments, but as their belongings disappeared around them, the couple clung to the doorframe, praying they would make it out alive.

The waters only grew more powerful, forcing Doug and Elizabeth from their home. Doug managed to grab onto a cedar post near the house and, with all his strength, helped Elizabeth reach it too. For four agonizing hours, the couple held on tightly, surrounded by the sound of destruction. “It sounded like a freight train and a tornado fighting,” Doug later recalled. In those terrifying moments, Elizabeth found strength in love: “At least we’ll go down together, or we’ll make it out together,” she told him.

Eventually, the floodwaters receded just enough for their feet to touch the ground. Dazed and exhausted, the couple was rescued by tow truck drivers who brought them to a triage area at a local high school. Despite a few minor injuries, they had survived. Doug’s beloved guitar miraculously spared in the attic crawl space was one of the few physical items they were able to recover from the wreckage.

Taken in by Doug’s parents, the couple tried to regroup as the reality of their loss set in. Elizabeth returned to work almost immediately, knowing survival meant rebuilding. Meanwhile, the death toll from the flood continued to rise, with communities mourning dozens of lives lost. But the Fullers’ story became a symbol of perseverance and unity. In the face of devastation, they held on—to each other, to hope, and to the belief that love could carry them through.
