Doctor explains why you should never kiss a deceased person

A Moldovan doctor has recently gone viral after sharing a surprising—and cautionary—message about a tradition many families hold dear: kissing a loved one goodbye after they pass. And his warning has sparked a powerful debate across social media.

Dr. Viktor Ivanovik, who has nearly 300,000 followers on TikTok, posted a brief but striking video urging viewers to avoid kissing the deceased during final farewells. His message was simple, direct, and unexpected:

“Never kiss the deceased!” he said.

According to Dr. Ivanovik, around nine hours after death, a body begins to decompose and releases harmful bacteria. He explains that coming into contact with these bacteria—especially by kissing the deceased—can potentially lead to health issues, including the loss of smell.

The clip quickly spread across social platforms, prompting strong emotional reactions and a wave of personal testimonies.

Many viewers said they had never considered the possibility of bacterial exposure during traditional farewell rituals. Others pushed back, expressing that the emotional need to say goodbye outweighs any potential health risk.

One viewer wrote passionately,
“I kissed my father and would do it a million times over! I can lose taste and smell—he is my father!”

Dr. Ivanovik’s warning highlights a delicate balance between cultural practices and medical caution. In many communities, touching or kissing a loved one after death is considered an essential act of respect, closure, or spiritual connection. Few think of the potential health implications during such deeply emotional moments.

His video has since sparked broader conversations online about how to navigate long-standing traditions with sensitivity while still prioritizing safety. Many commenters emphasized the importance of respecting different cultural norms, especially during times of grief when emotions are high and rituals hold deep meaning.
