A woman in northwest Indiana, Mercedes Wells, was forced to give birth in her car after Franciscan Health Crown Point discharged her while she was in obvious active labor. Despite severe pain and contractions one minute apart, staff allegedly dismissed her, and security escorted her and her husband Leon out of the hospital without ever seeing a doctor.
Eight minutes later, Mercedes delivered her daughter, Alena, in the front seat of their truck on the side of the road, with Leon forced to assist alone. They then drove to another hospital for care.
The family, supported by sister-in-law Cherise Thompson, is demanding justice and has hired attorney Cannon Lambert, alleging discrimination and negligence. The hospital launched an investigation; within days, the nurse and doctor involved were reportedly no longer employed there.
The ordeal continues, as Mercedes was later rushed back to the hospital due to severe pain doctors attribute to trauma from the roadside delivery. The family is calling for accountability and systemic change.
