Living Under One Roof Turned Nightmare: My Daughter-in-Law’s Habits Crossed Every Line

Last year, my son and his wife moved in with me temporarily while they saved for their own place. At first, I was thrilled to have them close, cooking their favourite meals and even giving up my home office to make space for them.

However, things soon took a turn. My daughter-in-law’s habits became increasingly inconsiderate—leaving dirty dishes piled up, reusing tea bags multiple times, and even neglecting to flush the toilet to save water. Despite my efforts to maintain a welcoming home, I began to feel more like a housekeeper than a mother.

The tipping point came one evening after I prepared dinner and cleared the table. When I asked her to do the dishes, she responded, “If you want me to do chores, you have to pay me. I do enough at my job.” I was stunned into silence.

I turned to my son for support, but he dismissed my concerns, saying, “Mom, she works really hard. It’s not fair to expect her to come home and clean too.” I stood there, swallowing my frustration, unsure how to express my feelings without causing a rift.
