There’s nothing like a warm shower to unwind, but showering too often can actually harm your skin. Frequent hot showers and harsh soaps strip away the skin’s natural oils and helpful bacteria, leading to dryness, itching, and irritation. Hot water can also affect blood pressure and cause dizziness, while washing hair too often makes it dry and brittle.
Experts say most adults only need to shower two to three times a week, unless their lifestyle requires more. Short, warm showers are best — about three to five minutes — focusing mainly on the armpits, groin, and face. Over-cleaning may even limit immune development, especially in children.
Hygiene matters, but moderation protects your skin’s natural defenses. Sometimes the healthiest choice is simply giving your body room to do its job.
