My Dad Called My Son a “Burden,” So I Protected Myself

Jessica, 27, discovered she was pregnant after the baby’s father abandoned her. Despite fear and uncertainty, she chose to keep her child, believing he was a blessing. But instead of support, her family—especially her father—responded with anger and shame. Their silence and harsh comments made an already difficult time even heavier.

One night, overwhelmed and exhausted, Jessica was trying to soothe her crying newborn when her father suddenly snapped, calling the baby “a burden” and saying she’d regret keeping him. Those words cut deeper than anything she’d ever heard. Protecting her son became her priority, so she packed her things and left her parents’ home that same night.

Weeks passed with almost no contact. Jessica missed her father, but the pain of his words kept her away. Then her mother called, asking her to come home because her father wanted to apologize but didn’t know how. When she visited, Jessica saw genuine regret in her dad’s eyes, though he struggled to express it. He looked at her baby with unexpected tenderness, and it left her torn.

Now Jessica is stuck between protecting her son and wanting to believe her father has changed. She knows healing takes time, boundaries are necessary, and her peace must come first. Whether or not she forgives him, she’s learning that real strength is choosing what keeps her and her child safe.
