As he nears 100, Dick Van Dyke, 99, makes a touching confession about his life

Dick Van Dyke may be 99, but his vibrant energy hasn’t dimmed. The legendary performer who charmed generations in films like Mary Poppins, Bye Bye Birdie, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang continues to dance through life with joy. Over his long career, he earned numerous honors, including five Primetime Emmys, a Tony, a Grammy, induction into the Television Hall of Fame, and the SAG Life Achievement Award. In 2021, he also received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

As he nears his 100th birthday, Van Dyke has opened up about aging with a rare sincerity. In a diary entry shared with The Times, he admitted that growing older reshapes every part of life—relationships, routines, and one’s sense of place. He confessed that it can feel isolating, noting most of his social visits now happen at home.

He also reflected on the emotional weight of witnessing a turbulent world. He admitted he sometimes becomes “the grumpy old man who yells at the TV,” overwhelmed by the cruelty and chaos he sees. Yet even in these moments, his honesty reveals a deeply human side. A touching part of his reflections centers on his wife, Arlene Silver. Van Dyke credits their romance—full of humor, warmth, and affection—as the reason he remains so lively. Their connection has long charmed fans, especially given the 46-year age difference that once raised eyebrows.

The couple delighted viewers again with a joyful anniversary video featuring Van Dyke’s vocal group, The Vantastix. Singing “Everybody Loves a Lover,” the group showcased cheerful harmonies, lighthearted dancing, and genuine fun. The video quickly won more than 790,000 views and glowing comments praising Van Dyke’s enduring spirit. Despite the challenges of aging, Van Dyke insists joy is a choice. “No one is genetically miserable,” he wrote, explaining that he has lived so long by refusing to surrender to negativity, loss, or hardship. At 99, he remains a reminder that optimism, love, and laughter truly keep the heart young.
