I Went Into Debt to Help My Mom — And Now I’m Struggling with Regret

Growing up, my mom was my rock. It was always just the two of us, and she promised me that family comes first no matter what. She was my biggest supporter, always making sacrifices so I wouldn’t feel the burden of our struggles. So when she called me one night in tears, begging for $20,000 to save her home, I didn’t hesitate. Even though I didn’t have the money, I took out a loan to help her because I trusted her completely.

But just a week later, everything changed. When I visited her, I was shocked to find brand-new furniture and a massive TV filling her living room. Confused and hurt, I confronted her about the money she claimed she desperately needed for bills. She just laughed and said she deserved to be happy too, as if my sacrifice was nothing. That moment shattered my heart and left me questioning everything I thought I knew about her.

Now, I lie awake at night, weighed down by debt and betrayal. Every loan payment is a painful reminder that the person who promised to protect me instead took advantage of my love and trust. I’m torn between wanting to forgive and realizing I need to set boundaries to protect myself from further harm. It’s a painful lesson about how money can complicate family and how trust can sometimes be broken in the worst ways.

I’m learning that it’s okay to acknowledge these feelings of hurt and confusion. Talking honestly with my mom and setting clear boundaries might help, but healing will take time. Family means a lot to me, but self-respect and trust have to come first — even when it’s hardest to do.
