Peanuts: The Delicious Superfood With Powerful Health Effects—And Important Precautions You Should Know

Peanuts are loved around the world for their flavor and versatility, especially in Brazil, where they star in desserts like paçoca and pé-de-moleque. But beyond taste, peanuts offer impressive health benefits thanks to their protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Studies suggest they may help support heart health, improve satiety, regulate cholesterol, steady blood sugar, and even reduce the risk of certain diseases.

Among their biggest benefits, peanuts help keep you full longer due to their mix of protein, fiber, and fats. They can also help stabilize blood sugar when used to replace red meat a few times per week. Research shows they may lower the risk of rectal cancer and are linked to a reduced chance of developing gallstones, likely because of their helpful impact on cholesterol metabolism.

Still, moderation matters. Eating too many peanuts can lead to weight gain or digestive discomfort. They shouldn’t be eaten on an empty stomach, and moldy peanuts must be avoided due to the risk of aflatoxin. People taking blood thinners should consult a doctor because peanuts contain vitamin E, which can affect blood clotting.

Finally, peanuts are not for everyone. Those with peanut allergies must avoid them completely, and individuals with gout or sensitive digestion should consume them cautiously. When eaten responsibly, peanuts remain a nutritious, affordable, and delicious addition to many diets.
