Tattoos can be powerful forms of self-expression, but some carry dangerous meanings that are anything but artistic. Across the U.S., law enforcement has flagged specific tattoos as indicators of gang membership or criminal history. These symbols are no longer confined to big cities — they’re appearing in small communities, schools, and workplaces, often unnoticed by the public.

The letters “MS” or “MS-13” link directly to the violent gang Mara Salvatrucha, known for brutal crimes. Numbers like “14” and “88” are often used by white supremacist groups, including the Aryan Brotherhood, with “14” referring to a racist slogan and “88” representing “Heil Hitler.” These tattoos may look harmless but are serious red flags when seen in suspicious situations.

Other common gang tattoos include the spiderweb, often on the elbow, signaling time in prison or gang protection, and the teardrop under the eye, which can mean the wearer has killed for their gang. Tattoos with three dots (“mi vida loca”) or five dots (symbolizing prison life) also indicate a connection to gang culture, violence, or incarceration.

While not everyone with these tattoos is a threat, context matters. If you see someone displaying them in a way that feels threatening or suspicious, do not engage. Contact law enforcement immediately — it could be the difference between safety and danger.
