I lost my son a few years ago, and the grief never really leaves you—it just changes shape. Before he passed, he had been dating a girl, and later I discovered that I did, in fact, have a grandson. Wanting to do the right thing and honor my son in the best way I could, I decided to provide monthly child support, hoping it would help give the child stability and care.
Eventually, she married another man, and they shared their plan for him to adopt my grandson and to keep my son’s existence a secret until the child was old enough to understand. That was something I couldn’t agree with. I made it clear that I wouldn’t continue paying if my son was erased from his own child’s story—and that decision led to consequences I never fully expected.
