Police have locked down a suburb of Canberra following reports of a man with a firearm.Those in Whitlam were advised to remain indoors and follow police instructions as the lockdown came into effect shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday.One resident claimed to have heard officers instruct a man to ‘drop the gun’ on Hazel Hawkes Avenue, the Canberra Times reported.One person of interest, 39, has been taken into custody. No charges have been laid.
Police are not seeking any other people in relation to the incident.A dozen police units and two fire trucks attended the scene and several roadblocks were erected.Some roadblocks remain in place as investigators sweep the scene.We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while the police operation was undertaken,’ ACT Police said in a statement.
