My MIL Took the Cash from Our Wedding Card Box for ‘Safekeeping’ – When I Asked for It Back, She Made a Scene

On what should have been the happiest day of my life, my mother-in-law Sharon decided to take control of something that wasn’t hers—our wedding card box.

At first, I brushed it off. She said she’d keep it “safe” in her car. But the next morning, she announced over brunch that she’d counted the money and was keeping it. Worse, she’d already “redistributed” some to relatives who “needed it more.”

Grant and I were stunned. That money wasn’t a toy—it was the beginning of our baby fund. When we pushed back, Sharon dismissed us as greedy and irresponsible.

So we changed tactics. Grant told her calmly, “Without that money, we can’t afford to start a family. If you’re holding onto it, you’re holding us back.”

Two days later, she showed up with the full amount in cash, pretending she was doing us a favor. We took it, deposited it, and labeled it Baby Fund—a promise to ourselves, not to her.

And when she started asking about grandchildren, Grant shut her down with one sentence: “Don’t take what isn’t yours next time, Mom.”

The truth is, Sharon didn’t just try to steal money—she tried to steal control. But we learned something important that day: our future belongs to us, not to her.
