It was a quiet afternoon when five-year-old Lily tugged on her mother’s dress.“Mummy,” she said, her wide eyes serious, “when you were at work today, a strange lady came around.”Emma, busy unpacking groceries, barely looked up.“Not now, sweetheart. Let’s wait until Daddy gets home, and you can tell us both together.”
Lily nodded, though her little face scrunched up with frustration. When David, Lily’s father, walked through the door later that evening, Emma greeted him with her usual smile, though curiosity burned inside her. After dinner, she turned to Lily.“Now, dear,” Emma said gently, “what were you saying about Daddy and the strange lady?”Lily sat up straight, excited to finally share. “While you were at work, Mummy, a lady came here! She had a big hat and pretty shoes. Daddy told us to hide, and then they went into the living room. I tried to peek, but Daddy closed the door.
”Emma’s heart skipped a beat. She glanced sharply at David, who had frozen mid-bite.“David,” Emma said carefully, “what is our daughter talking about?”David opened his mouth to speak, but Lily wasn’t finished. And then,” Lily added innocently, “Daddy and the lady started making funny noises. It sounded like when we play tag — lots of giggles! Then Daddy gave me a cookie and told me not to tell you.”
Emma’s face went pale.
“David!” she snapped. “Explain. Now.”David’s face turned crimson as he stammered, “Emma, it’s not what you think!”Lily tilted her head. “Oh! And Daddy called her ‘Miss Realtor.’ She said she was here to show us the secret room for our surprise new house!”Emma blinked, stunned. “Wait… what?”David exhaled in relief, rubbing his forehead. “I was planning to surprise you, Em. I’ve been working with a realtor to buy us a new home. She stopped by today, and I didn’t want to ruin the surprise, so I told Lily to keep it a secret.”
Lily clapped her hands. “See, Mummy? Daddy said we’ll have a big yard for a swing set!”Emma’s anger melted into laughter as she hugged Lily.“Well, David, you certainly gave me a scare,” she said, shaking her head. “Next time, maybe don’t make it sound so… suspicious.”David chuckled nervously, kissing Emma’s cheek. “Noted. No more secret surprises.”And Lily? She just grinned, happy to finally share her story — and excited about the swing set that was coming her way.
