A winter outing in northern New York turned tragic when a snowmobile broke through the ice on a frozen pond in St. Lawrence County. Multiple people were thrown into the icy water, setting off a desperate struggle for survival. Rescue crews arrived to find chaos already unfolding — two men later died, while a father and a young child were treated for hypothermia. Authorities said 51-year-old Patrick LaPlante had gone searching for his son Bryan and others who hadn’t returned from ice fishing. When Patrick reached the scene, he found Bryan in the water and attempted to crawl across the ice to save him, only for the ice to collapse beneath him as well. Patrick managed to pull himself out and returned home to call for help. Soon after, a six-year-old boy arrived at his door, having walked nearly two miles alone through the freezing darkness to seek rescue.
Investigators later recovered Bryan LaPlante and his friend Michael Booth from the water, but both were pronounced dead at the hospital. Family members later shared a heartbreaking truth: Bryan had lifted his son to safety before losing his own life, giving the boy the chance to survive. His sister pushed back against early reports, saying her brother died a hero protecting his child. The community now mourns two lives lost while honoring the courage shown in those final moments — a father’s sacrifice, a child’s bravery, and a tragedy that has left an enduring mark on everyone touched by it.
