Mum’s driver’s licence

Children have a remarkable talent for asking the exact questions adults would rather avoid. One afternoon, a mother driving her daughter to a playdate found herself under interrogation. First came the innocent question about her age—dismissed as “not polite.” Then her weight—labeled “none of your business.” Finally, the ultimate question: why she and Daddy got divorced. That ended the conversation entirely. Later, the little girl confided to her friend that her mom “wouldn’t tell her anything,” only to be advised that a driver’s license was basically a report card with all the answers. That night, the child proudly revealed she knew her mother was 32, weighed 130 pounds, and—most devastatingly—that the divorce happened because her mom got an “F in sex,” having misread the “F” for female. The mother was left speechless, learning the hard way that honesty might be safer than silence.

That same brutal childhood logic appears in other moments of family life. A little girl once asked her mother why some of her hair had turned white, only to be told that every time her child caused stress, another strand lost its color. After thinking carefully, the girl asked why all of Grandma’s hair was white. Then there was young Logan, who skipped saying grace at Grandma’s house because, as he calmly explained, prayer was for their house—Grandma already knew how to cook. Together, these moments reveal a simple truth: kids don’t mean to be savage, but their honesty is pure, literal, and unintentionally hilarious. They don’t filter, soften, or protect adult feelings—they simply observe, conclude, and announce. And sometimes, the funniest lessons in humility come from the smallest voices at the table.
