Graham Greene, the acclaimed Indigenous Canadian actor best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, has died at the age of 73 in Toronto after a long illness. A trailblazer for Indigenous representation in film and television, Greene’s powerful performances across decades left an indelible mark on the industry.

His career spanned film, television, and stage, with standout roles in The Green Mile, Maverick, Longmire, and The Last of Us. Honored with a Grammy, Gemini, Canadian Screen Award, and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, Greene’s legacy goes beyond accolades — he opened doors for Indigenous actors and inspired countless others. He is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and daughter, Lilly.
