Authorities Identify 3 Victims in Austin Bar Incident

A night that normally would have been filled with music and laughter on Austin’s famous 6th Street turned into a heartbreaking tragedy that left the community mourning. Authorities confirmed that three individuals lost their lives outside a popular downtown bar in the early hours of March 1, 2026. Among them was 19-year-old Ryder Harrington, a Texas Tech University student remembered by family and friends as someone who brought energy and warmth wherever he went. His siblings shared emotional tributes online, describing him as both a best friend and a guiding presence in their lives. The University of Texas community is also grieving the loss of 21-year-old Savitha Shan, an honors student pursuing a double major in management information systems and economics. Professors and classmates described her as a standout scholar preparing for a promising career after graduation. The third victim, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, was known in the world of amateur mixed martial arts as “Trap Jorge,” a dedicated athlete admired for his determination and positive spirit both inside and outside the gym.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded shortly after 2 a.m. near Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, where crowds had gathered after a busy night. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire as people fled for safety. Police responded quickly, confronting the suspect within minutes. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was also killed during the confrontation. Investigators continue to review evidence and examine possible motives, though officials emphasize that the inquiry remains ongoing and no final conclusions have been announced. Community leaders have expressed deep sympathy for the families affected and gratitude for the swift response of emergency personnel who helped prevent further harm. As Austin processes the shock of the event, attention remains focused on honoring the lives lost and supporting those who were injured. In moments like these, the city is reminded of the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience as families and friends begin the difficult process of healing.
